Driveway and walkway rebuild on a fully compacted base with a segmental retaining wall and re-grading.

What we were looking at
The situation
Interlock fails from underneath. If the base is thin or badly compacted, the surface will move with the first freeze-thaw cycle no matter how good the stone is.
The base was excavated to depth, built in lifts and compacted properly before a single paver was laid. The retaining wall was engineered rather than stacked.
Scope of work
Excavation to depth and a granular base built in compacted lifts
Segmental retaining wall with proper backfill and drainage
Pavers laid to pattern with the edge restraints locked in
Grading corrected to carry water away from the structure
Polymeric jointing swept in and set
A surface that survives Ontario freeze-thaw instead of settling by the second winter.
